Vinyasa Krama Yoga in Saint Tropez

Vinyasa Krama Yoga in Saint Tropez – France

Are you coming to Saint Tropez area, and you would like to practice yoga?

Here I wrote this article for you to know a little bit of what you will find if you practice with me.

Where does it come from?

Vinyasa Krama Yoga was developed by Srivatsa Ramaswami, direct student of Sri T. Krishnamacharya, who trained with him from over 30 years. The base of its practice is to connect the beautiful flows and transitions with breathing, generating consciousness in a harmonious way, uniting movement with a focused mind.

Fast or Slow?

There is a misconception on Vinyasa Yoga, that it has to be done fast.

Normally we will go to Vinyasa classes where you don’t stop or hold the Asanas. But in my personal opinion, we can’t move fast, if we can’t move slow. Only through holds, we generate self knowledge of each Asana.

Many movements are way harder when we do them slow, and the way our body improves is much more efficient, regarding strength, endurance and control.

Also, the correct way to practice Vinyasa Krama Yoga is, that if I move slow, my breathing should be slow, and if I move fast, my breath has to go fast. This requires a lot of concentration and focus, to really generate union between them.

Normally in my own practice, I prefer to start slow, until I feel 100% connected into a flowing breathing movement. Then it starts being faster and with less time holding the Asanas, but only in a speed that the breath-movement flow is not lost. If my breath starts being faster due to lack of endurance, then I will come back to longer holds.

I picture it as a dance, both (breathing and movement) have to go together at the same pace, otherwise the rythm is lost.

Sequences and Creativity

What happens if we always repeat the same sequence? We get very good at it, but at nothing else.

That is why, I believe that we have to explore different ways to come from one Asana into another. Different ways will generate different connections in our nervous system.

Once we get good at some basic movements and transitions, we should explore into different ways to reach them. We develop an encyclopedia of movements in our brain and body. And from time to time, get back to the basics and repeat them again, so we widen our base. Through time and practice we will be able move in lots of different ways and our practice will seem limitless.

The only constant is change. One day we will choose a peaceful relaxing practice and some other day we will prefer a vigorous one. Depending in how we feel, what our body and mind needs, external circumstances, etc. So we should play with this, feel free to create and explore, and the most important thing, learn to listen to your body.

Because we should always aim for balance, if we only practice in one specific way, we lose our balance too. Our practice should have several goals, rather than just relax, or strength or flexibility. It should take them all in account and give time for all of them to develop.

We will always have some preferences, such as doing handstands or just sitting into breathwork and meditation, but because we are a whole, and this practice focuses on that, then we have to practice what it doesn’t feel confortable or fun to us. With the correct guidance and support, we will learn how to reach new limits and produce a true change in ourselves.

Adapted Practice

Does the practice has to adapt to the practitioner? Or on the contrary, the practice should be rigid and is the practitioner that has to adapt to it?

I believe that is the practice the one that has to be adapted. First, based on the nature of our bodies. Our body structure will tell us, where our limits are. Then, after getting better at practicing within them, we can start exploring the possibility of widen them, little by little. But always considering our health and well-being as a priority.

Sometimes in the same classes we will find people with very different level of practice and physical conditions. In my experience, high level practitioners tend to focus their practice more specifically, and novice practitioners, will do just what they can.

How do we find a balance under this circumstances? I believe that, by focusing on the base, even a high level practitioner will gain from it, and the novices will learn and have fun at the same time.

Opening the door to Meditation

Moving in fancy ways is fun, but Yoga is much more than just movement. It should be a door to Meditation.

We should at least have as we have a yogasana practice every day or 3 times a week, we also should meditate in the same way in a different practice time or moment, but we all know how hard is to do this, very few have the discipline to get into it for a long period of time, and I include myself into this group. That is why, when we practice Yoga, it should be taken as an opportunity to meditate, first in an active way, and then, spend 5 to 10 minutes sitting down.

If we don’t do this, then Yoga transforms only in a gymnastics practice. Which for many, including myself, is a deformation of its original purpose.

As I mentioned before, the practice has to adapt to each person, but it also should keep a certain structure that enables anyone to develop all kind of skills, and meditation is one of them, probably the most important one.

There are enough studies that reveal how good is meditation for our health and life in general. And originally, Yoga was developed, to enhance the practitioner capacity to stay in a sitted position for meditation. So even if we end up doing fancy handstands or backbends, we have to remember, that the real purpose for our practice is to meditate.

A Fitness Nomad in Tulum

I was in Chile having a successful job as personal trainer but I felt something was missing. I had this deep feeling of travelling and see for myself, how could be to travel and work as a fitness coach in other country, in a beautiful and magical place, close to the sea, and surrounded by nature. I really thought about doing this for a long time, and after a year, I threw myself to the experience.

This article is meant for anyone who is wanting to do the same. Maybe you watched a motivating video in your instagram, or maybe you have a friend that is doing it too. Maybe you feel you have accomplished almost everything society wanted from you, and now you are looking for a change. Something more sintonized with your spirit.

The reasons can be multiple, only you know what is better for you. So I will just leave part of my experience here, so it serves to you.

Why Tulum?

Many people asked me when I was already there. I would say, that it was a mixture of intuition and circumstances. First, I had Mexico in mind long time ago to visit. Second, I wanted to go to the caribbean sea. Third, I was looking for a place with nature and interesting things to do, at the same time, didn’t wanted to go to a big city or to a remote place, just something in the middle. Fourth, the first time I was in Tulum, during my travel through Mexico, I had this special feeling of «I would live here», and even I knew amazing places after this first visit, none of them gave me the same sensation, so I went back to Tulum and decided that I would stay and do the bet (this decision was the most difficult and transformed my life forever, for a better life).

How did I start?

I just sent email to all hotels and Yoga studios and Fitness centers I could find in a google search, presenting myself with a little resume and a link to my social media and websites, asking for an interview or chance to work there. Went knocking door by door, doing the same. Until someone gave me the chance to start, and then everything just went forward like a snowball.

Would I do this again?

Yes! Totally, but with some considerations and deeper goals in mind that just having the experience. Because is never enough, when you are a seeker, you discover that there is a part of you that only shines when you set foot out of your confort zone and do what you love. Its risky, its dangerous, its difficult, and lonely. But at the same time is one of the best experiences in life for you self steem, for your soul, for your personal and professional growth.

You see, I had in mind a dream. My dream was to have a carreer jump into an international public, use all the skills I got and learn new. Reach new people and add them into my life, not just as figures in the social media, but as a real human, doing real things. Not only locally, but globally.

My suggestions to you:

  1. Learn and use new languages. In Tulum, english is a must, because of the international audience. You have to be able to give classes in english and if you know more languages, they add up. When you contact possible places to work in, do it in english.
  2. Have a medical insurance, just in case. I had dengue and some infections due to street food, so is good that you consider this.
  3. Don’t be afraid. Nobody knows you, so consider yourself starting from zero and give yourself the chance to be who you are. There is nobody to impress. Be yourself, do what you love, show up and give your best.
  4. Consider the visa permits to stay in the country you are visiting and have the necessary money, to go out and come in again if you plan to stay longer. Also have a money reserve or a ticket to go back to your country just in case there is an emergency.
  5. Choose the right season. Places like Tulum in which many people go for vacations, has of course high and low season. If you are planning to go for the high season, expect to have a lot of competition, many other yoga, meditation and fitness teachers and alike, want to do the same. I started in the lower season, this made it a little easier to find a job, and if you focus on doing your work right, and in positive relationships with the bussiness owners, you can expect to have better oportunities for the high season.
  6. Enjoy it. You never know if this is going to be the last time you do something like this. The amount of things we can really put under our control is so few that really, don’t stress if things don’t go the way you planned. Just go with the flow, enjoy the ride and be literally like a sponge. Absorb all the experiences, into you, keep the beautiful and good people in your heart and of course your social media, and let go everything else.

In the end, the main actor and creator of your life is you. Follow your heart and intuition, it will serve you as a compass when you feel lonely or lost, avoiding trouble and dangers that may show up in your journey.

Be aware of some people, because not everything that shine is gold. Many people are waiting for persons with their heart open, to take some kind of advantage, so don’t loose yourself, remember who you are, your roots and the people who love you back in your country. Because you are going to be the ambassador of everyone and everything you learnt at home.

I wish that if you are reading this, to take the decision to jump out, DO IT, fearlessly and with love in your heart. Don’t travel to escape your reality, don’t explore the world with unresolved relationships and feelings. Do it because you are complete, and you feel ready to give your best out there. And if at any moment, you need someone to express or communicate your thoughts and feelings. You can write to me, I will be happy to answer.

Love.

Dreaming The Perfect Beach – Part 3 – Tayrona

In this journey that seems imposible to end, i found myself in Colombia. A land of mysteries, great food, beautiful women, with a magic of its own, and of course, one of the most paradise like places i ever known, its called, «Parque Nacional Tyrona».

Started this trip in Bogotá, where i stayed 5 days in a friends apartment. It is a nice city, big and noisy as any capital you would go to. It has a lot of green all around, and the people are lively. It reminded me some places of my own city, Santiago, but its different though. The weather changes a lot, in one day you can have rain, wind and sun. Its inhabitants, «bogotanians», say it is a cold weather, but when you are used to colder places such as Chile, it just feels like spring.

In the first place i didn’t have a plan to follow (no big surprise coming from me), so i just improvised through it. After thinking what would i do after being in Bogotá, i decided to go to the Tyrona Park, at the north of the country. So i just bought the ticket, and next morning i was flying to my new destiny.

The plane arrived and when i got down, i could feel the warm and humid weather of tropic. I was way too overdressed for that place. Picked up a taxi and told the driver, «hey look my plan is to know Santa Marta (the city where you have to go to, in order to get to the park), and then go to the park». He replied: «why don’t you go direct to the park?, i mean, don’t loose time in here, just go there, is cheaper and nicer.», «oh well i said, why not, but lets just go to the drugstore first». Bought there some water, sun screen and repellent. And then we just went straight to the park.

big treeArrived at the main entrance, had lunch in a local restaurant at the side of the road and then just went into it. They made me watch a 15 minutes video of the park, very boring, and then gave a speech of the things you must not do, like wander around the jungle at night, or out of the trails. Swimming in dangerous areas, make fire, etc, etc.

Started to walk with my camping bag, it wasn’t heavy, but the heat and humidity, made it a little harder. A car stopped and hitchhiked me, towards the real entrance for the trails. i was feeling very excited, because everything was new to me, i could recognize a nice smell of plants and herbs, very sweet, mixing with the sea air. Everything was like those adventures that you don’t want them to finish.

Walked around 2 hours through the jungle, could watch some monkeys playing around over the trees and lots of lizards all over. Finally got to my destiny, named, «Cabo de San Juán». There i stayed 5 nights sleeping in a hammock and chilling at the beach, did a trekking to an indian town in the middle of the jungle and other beaches and the most important thing, was that i could get to know  new friends.

This was my first vacations i would take since started with my bussiness as a Personal Trainer, lot of thing happened to me since then, some up and downs regarding my last relationship, and lots of work. So this time off, with myself, was way too great, many people asked me why i would travel alone, why not a girlfriend or a friend. But i just kept answering, «i want time with myself, in a foreign place, where i can really enjoy things in a clearer way».

And this was a perfect place for that. When i got there, i could notice, there were lots of travellers, from different parts of the world, specially europeans. Not as many «colombians» one could expect. Every day would arrive 2 or 3 boats full of people that would stay just for the day. So paradise was invaded with people. Before dawn, they would leave, and just stay a few. Those were the peacefull times.

One thing that had my relax taken away, was the long waits for everything, breakfast, beers, lunch, juice, bathroom, showers. You must do lines for everything, and after the third day, you start feeling a little tired of that. I mean, if you are looking to relax, you don’t expect to wait so much for everything. But it all depends in your inner self, so it was a good oportunity to practice tolerance and patience.

In the other hand, that is one of the most beautiful beaches i have ever known. Paradise it self made just to receive as a bliss of life. A place to heal, to relax, to be quiet. If you can find a great place to make a wish, what ever is it. Do it there, you won’t regret it. The calmness of the sea, its warmth, invites you to play, be thankfull and enjoy life as a sacred thing.

There is a big part of myself, that can be described as «introvert». But when i know people, i am very «extrovert». So most of the time, i was just in silence. But also made new friends. It was great, everyone there is just passing by, so every minute is precious to share with this humans, you get along with. So there is no big time to do «small talk», i would prefer to talk about their life’s point of view, dreams, experiences, spirituality, love. And for anyone that knows me, thats no big difference from my usual tendency, but not everyone have the same motivation, so usually i would have to adapt, and talk about nonsense. But in this oportunity, that was not the case, again, you are having a conversation in a tropical paradise with a «stranger», so why would i talk about «nonsense», that would be nonsense!

Anyway, for those precious human beings i met there, thank you. You made my trip better. Because, in the end, what really stays with you, what ever happens, is your experience of life. One could say, humans are this, or that. We don’t know if we were born from alien technology, from god or just a result of evolution. Its hard to define ourselves. What we are certan to know is that, we are here being, and for me, thats a big truth. We are at some point between the smallest particle of an atom and the bigest galaxy cluster you could find.

Thanks Tayrona, thanks Colombia, thanks life. Until the next trip.

Dreaming the perfect beach – Part 2 – Florianópolis

After four days in Buenos Aires, I left with a good feeling and at the same time, a little sick of the air conditioning. Had a terrible headacke but i was really enthusiastic about going to Brasil.

After a 2 hours flight i reached my destination. A friend went to pick me up and we went straight to her house, it was around 2 am, get asleep and woke up at 9. My friend wasn’t at home, but her grandmother was, so with my «portuñol» we started talking about different things, she offered me coffee, which i gladly accepted and something for breakfast. When my friend arrived, we had lunch and she showed me the rest of the house. In the middle of the lunch, she asked me «What do you want to do?», i didn’t know what to say, so i looked a little disoriented, and her grandmother, with her inmense wisdom said: «just show him the beach!». My eyes sparkled with joy and answered with a big YES.

Its impresive how that powerfull question, can really let you without clue about anything. I mean we can say things like, i want to eat, sleep, work, rest. But those are just part of our daily life.

«What do you want to do?» There is no correct answer for that, there is just doing.

The good thing was that my friend lived very close to the beach, just 5 minutes by car and 15 walking. So it wasn’t a long wait. How can i put it? The first thing i saw, was this big and yellow sand beach, the sea was light blue and in front of us, a very mysterious island named «Campeche Island». The weather was nice, i took off my shirt and went directly to swim. I was again a 6 year old boy, laughing and having one of my most wonderful experiences of my life. That feeling that i was there, in a paradise, that all my decisions would bring me there, and that suddenly the vastness of the world and the atlantic ocean was open to me. I couldn’t stop laughing and feel thankfull for that precious moment.

That day I had this feeling that the whole world was there for me, just like a big playground, waiting to be discovered. I just couldn’t realize how lucky i was, and of course i would never imagen all the experiences i had the next 6 month in Florianópolis.

The people there call that island, «Ilha da magia», which means, «The Island of Magic». They have lots of stories about how different people realized their dreams and others lost their lives. Who ever you were, if you were there, the island was inviting you to discover her and connect to her energy. Everything you could have in your heart could be posible, but of course, not for free. Because every magic needs something in exchange to work. It can be your money, it can be work, or maybe love. What ever you’d like to receive, you should be able to give back or else be taken by the same force that guides you.

That magical place gave me precious friends, precious experiences and so much love in many forms and ways, that forever, one part of my heart will be connected to Florianópolis.

One of this experiences was a great bath with a huge rainbow in the sky all above the ocean!

Dreaming the perfect beach – Part 1 – Buenos Aires

It was January of 2013

I was working for my grade in university, after 10 years of studying and never been able to gave it a finishing point. I was really tired, was working in an Advertising Agency and at the same time, working as an Event Manager, for self-development courses. Had a girlfriend and trained 3 times a week. I barely sleeped those days, and what i really wanted was to close everything and go somewhere far away, have time for myself, and start working on what i thought it would be my next 10 years of life.

As a Life Coach i knew the importance of having a «life project», and i definetly wanted to do a serious change on my lifestyle. Wanted to stop working in multimedia, computers had my mind sick and my soul dead. But more importantly, i wanted to really start living my life to the fullest, feel the happiness of being alive, working on what i felt real passion.

So i ended my university grade on a thursday the 31st of january. The same day, i got fired because of personel reduction (i was so relieved, i couldn’t imagen my self working one more day in that place), went to my house did some calls, some days later i got a credit offer, and without thinking it too much, took the money they were offering me, paid some bills, quit from the Event Manager job, bought a one-way ticket to Buenos Aires Argentina, and another one to Florianopolis, Brasil. And there my adventure begun.

Why Brasil? Why Florianopolis?

Well, i did a list of all the places i wanted to go. My brother was living those days in New Zealand, so the idea of going and paying him a visit, was interesting, BUT, of all the places, Florianopolis was the one i could get and stay with the budget i had at the moment, besides i had some friends over there, and i had listened some very good recomendations about the island. All i ever wanted was to live by the sea, in a peaceful beach, learn to surf, and maybe fall in love with life and a beautiful woman too.

Why Buenos Aires first?

Because its a «must» place to visit at least once in life. It has so much life, its a huge city in a huge country, full of great food, interesting places to check, some amazing artists and people to know, etc…

I spent 4 days in Buenos Aires, it was my first time there, and wanted to know everything, so i just walked all over. Saw everything i could and of course, ate everything i got to find over there. My mother had a friend, who offered me to stay in her apartment those days, so i didn’t have to pay for that, just my personal tourism.

There i had an experience that really proved my nerves on this trip. I was just getting off the plane, people suggested me, to go without cash, and use the chilean debit cards, because they worked there. So i needed to take a van to the city, asked how much it was, and went to the bank machines, it was eleven in the night, almost midnight, and my debit card would not work in that machines, went to all the posible ones, and neither of them worked! I was so frustrated, didn’t know what to do, couldn’t call anyone. I had the money, i just couldn’t take it from the bank machine.

After 1 hour of trying the imposible become posible, i noticed another person in the same situation as me, he was a fellow chilean. Talked to him and  asked him, if he had some cash, he answered he only had 15 dollars in his wallet, and that he could’nt give me more. I asked him those 15, and promised him i would give them back, so he gave me his bank account number and went with my 15 dollars to buy the ticket for the van, that was going to the city. For those who don’t know, Ezeiza Airport is far away from the city, and you need a transportation in order to get there.

Went to the selling point, and for my surprise i needed 17 dollars, i had a lucky dollar in my wallet, but still not enough, i really needed 1 more f*** dollar and those guys would not accept less. Even if i begged, which i did.

For those who know about Argentina’s situation about the dollar, they got a black market for it. The official change wouldn’t be enough to buy the ticket, so i decided to buy a black market dollar, but, to whom?

I just stayed still and started to look for someone, with suspicious face, like a «black market face». A normal person, but that kind of look, you could get something illegal from him or her. An suddenly, i spotted a guy with those characteristics. Went straight to him, told him my story, and asked if he knew where to make the change. He looked at me, and said: «Yeah, sure, just go to the third store over there, speak with the fat guy, and tell him, Lorenzo (fictional name) is sending you». Just did what he told me, went to the fat guy in the third store, told him my story and of course, that «Lorenzo» was sending me, so he asked, «how much do you want?», I felt so relieved, bought more than enough Argentinian pesos, took the last Van to the city and when i reached the apartment, they received me with a good and cold beer.

I was so Happy, in the end, everything went good, it was a great experience. Anyway, i think i was lucky in many ways. I really suggest to avoid doing black market exchanges, unless you feel you can do it. You can always get in more troubles, so you need to be smart and smooth! And next time i travel to Argentina, i will sure have cash with me.

After that, as i already said, i walked all over, went to some museums, libraries, the zoo, some parks, great pizza places and ate the famous «bife chorizo».

For my next post, Florianópolis, the magic island!

Little Earth

Perspective

From our inner perspective, the world where we live is huge. Everything in human proportions seems to be inmense, and at the same time, it has so many details we can’t miss. If you go to a big city, you’ll find people and concrete, for certain. But every person you see and meet, will have their own daily dreams, challenges, dramas. In fact one single person is a whole universe of life.

Then you go to the beach or the mountains, and you could spend some days or weeks trying to «know» and «recognize» this place, and for certain say, «i’ve been there». But then again, you travel some miles and you’ll find another spot with new stuff to be discovered. And again new people to know, and new experiences to have.

But when we start joining the dots, the experiences, the places. We certainly will find an ultimate truth, no place is so different as another. We will find good and bad people everywhere, beautiful and ugly places, and of course great experiences and not so great ones too.

And in that dimension, we find ourselves in a vast world, full of different people, yet, all humans. With mountains, jungles, oceans and yet, still no place is like other, and every place makes us remember of another we already know.

We may use our whole life to discover our planet, and there will be so many places and people to find.

So this post is dedicated to this little planet, called earth and to humanity. If you have the chance or the gutts to go for a trip, do it, you will never regret it. Because traveling makes us grow, makes us better people, specially when we are able to reach other peoples hearts.

The challenge

Be an adventurer, discover your world, inner and outter. Live life in the present moment, and never let your self down, just remember there are billions of human beings with problems such as yours or greater, and if we can be of any help to others, sometimes just a conversation will fit enough. Do it from your heart, and discover what this little planet have for you.

Manifesto

sinlimites

1. Conócete a tí mismo.
